There is much talk about a crisis of education. Yet what is pointed to as the cause of this crisis is confusing at best and misleading at worst. There is, for example, the argument that our economy is in trouble because of poor education. This seems preposterous when compared to the role of the banks in our current economic crisis; irresponsibility and short-term considerations, lack of governmental regulation, and a culture of greed on Wall Street seem to be much more salient to this situation than education might be. Or when our automobile industry fails, blaming schools is surely obfuscation; poor planning for an era of higher gas prices, lack of innovation for changing transportation needs, and poor and expensive management seem much more pertinent. Indeed, despite talk of an economy that demands higher skills and more educated workers, predictions are for an economy that will continue to employ high numbers of low- and semi-skilled workers. Jobs that had been performed by high school graduates are now increasingly filled by those with college degrees. Elsewhere there is much talk about an educational crisis that is the result of our kids performing poorly in comparison with students from other countries. |
