Popis: 1993 will be the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the first bathing resort in Rimini. In the last few years, however, the area has experienced a serious decline, sparked off by the growth of algae in the Adriatic Sea. This article describes the adverse environmental effects caused by eutrophication of the Adriatic and the subsequent bad publicity. In fact the area was already suffering from overdevelopment before the algae problem, and general tourist dissatisfaction was exacerbated by the negative image based on exaggerated accounts of the algal bloom. Future policy must safeguard resources to provide a reliable holiday environment.
