Two petroleum refinery facilities located west of Metropolitan Toronto recently have been closed and there is a general desire to convert parts of both sites to residential use. Soil sampling has revealed elevated concentrations of metals and organic compounds on site. Soil concentrations necessary for sites to be acceptable for other uses have been established for several metals and some general parameters; however, similar guidelines do not yet exist for specific organic compounds. To expedite the process of identifying appropriate concentrations of organic compounds, the petroleum companies engaged a team of consultants to develop an approach that could determine soil guidelines for the two sites. |
