Popis:	EPR spectroscopy has been used to show that stable free radicals are formed when hoof horn material from equids is cut. The form of the EPR signal suggests that these are stable sulfur-centred radicals. The detection of melanin and thus the distinction between pigmentation levels of hoof horn is noted. Possible implications of these results are discussed.
