Popis: | This report has been prepared in conjunction with the continuing archaeological evaluation and investigation plan for Bureau of Land Management (BLM), State of Arizona, and privately held lands near Kelvin, Pinal County, Arizona. Specifically, this report provides site evaluations and the results of a testing program conducted at ten sites located near Elder Gulch in the Middle Gila Basin of central Arizona. This testing program was conducted from April 24 through May 16, 1990 by SWCA Environmental Consultants, Inc. at the request of Mr. Neil A. Gambell, Technical Services Administrator for ASARCO Incorporated-Ray Unit, in Hayden, Arizona. ASARCO proposes to utilize portions of the property as a mine-tailings impoundment facility. The purpose of this program was to determine if significant subsurface cultural deposits are present as they relate to criteria of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The testing program conducted at these ten sites has determined that four of the ten sites [AZ V:13:69 (ASM), AZ V:13:94 (ASM), AZ V:13:95 (ASM), and AZ V:13:96 (ASM)] contain subsurface cultural deposits which may make them eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. These four sites will require additional data recovery studies to adequately document the remains if they are to be impacted. Sites AZ V:13:66 (ASM), AZ V:13:84 (ASM), AZ V:13:85 (ASM), AZ V:13:93 (ASM), AZ V:13:97 (ASM) and AZ V:13:98 (ASM), were all found to contain no significant subsurface deposits. It is thought that the information potential of these sites has been exhausted as a result of this testing program. Therefore, SWCA recommends that a "no effect" determination be made for these sites. |
