The introduction proposes and outlines family life and formation of kinship as domains of creativity. The discussion embraces the ‘gender holistic’ (Eisler and Montuori in Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies 3: Article 3, 2007) perspective on creativity that emphasizes the social, relational, and contextual nature of creative processes in everyday life and the ordinary. The chapter then examines scholarly debates on the conceptualization and understanding of ‘family’ beyond the norm of the heterosexual nuclear family. Further, it provides an overview of the ways in which new media and reproductive technologies contribute to the shaping of family and kinship formations. By bringing these strands of the current discussions together, the authors prepare the background for the explorations of the creative nature of family life and kinship in contemporary Europe that follow in the subsequent chapters. |
