Responses of cold climate vegetation to increasing temperature and CO2 are enormously complex and varied, but many general predictions can be made based on the interplay of temperature with the natural seasonal progression in phenological events and acclimation to temperature extremes. Paradoxically, greater freezing stress is predicted to occur in cold climate vegetation with increasing temperature, with the effects being amplified by increasing CO2. The vulnerability of frost, loss in snow cover and delay in the breaking of dormancy in a warming climate are all discussed. |
