When this topic was assigned to me, I thought everybody else was also going to talk about some aspect of the architectural reaction in the 1930s, and then to my horror I discovered that there are only two others who have this particularly unpleasant aspect to deal with. But having accepted the topic, I began to pursue it and soon discovered that I was not particularly familiar with the events because I was really too young when they happened. At the same time I had tended to pass the period over in my mind as being a rather distasteful interval. Nor did this decade seem particularly significant in Austria to be studied from the point of view of architectural history. I was also reminded forcefully that there is a tremendous difference between "personal time" and "historic time," and that it was impossible for me to achieve the kind of dispassionate judgment in the handling of material for this period which we all at least aim for when handling historical evidence.
