However, a leader does something more than just manage our tasks and our time. A leader has the ability to influence and empower others, and leaders in any organization can be thought of as belonging to 1 of 2 types. The first type consists of formal leaders. Formal leaders are given leadership based on their position in a group. They are assigned to be leaders as part of their role in an organization. The formal leader has a job to organize and direct group1 members to meet the goals of the organization, team, or unit. The best formal leaders are not merely telling us what to do; they are leading by example and inspire their staff to do their best. Effective leaders create a desire in their staff to strive towards excellence. An informal leader is someone who does not have the official authority to direct a group. These are the individuals who are willing to step up and take action. Informal leaders can be found throughout all levels of an organization. We all know these individuals because they are the coworkers staff approach when there is a problem to be solved or a potluck to be planned.2 These are the go-to nurses on the unit.
