Popis: Distribution networks are frequently challenged with voltage instability, energy losses, and capacity and transfer problems. Distributed generation (DG) at optimal locations in a network can boost system reliability and sustainability by reducing energy loss and improving voltage stability. As environmental concerns increase and fossil fuel availability decreases, integrating renewable energy-based generation in a power system network should be considered to meet the increasing demand for electrical energy. However, it remains a challenge to determine the location and sizes for renewable-based generators within the distribution network. In this paper, an effective technique using the Voltage Stability Index (VSI) method and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed for optimal placement and size of DGs in a radial distribution system. The main contributions of the paper are: (1) to propose the use of VSI, (2) to calculate optimal DG placement based on VSI, (3) to apply GA to calculate DG size, and (4) to evaluate the impact of DG placement on loss reduction and voltage profile improvement. This study uses the case of a 9.7 MVA distribution network in Kabul, Afghanistan. Simulations performed in MATLAB show that the low voltage problem has been eliminated at all nodes, significant energy loss reduction can be achieved, and network reserve capacity was increased using the proposed methodology.
