Studies of light adaptation in the visual cells of invertebrates have shown the occurrence of two different effects of the adaptating light on the sensitivity of the receptor cell: in some cases an increase in sensitivity called “facilitation” or “sensitivity facilitation” has been reported (Dahl, 1978), while in others the more usual decrease in sensitivity was observed, along with a shortening in the time scale of the response (Fuortes and Hodgkin, 1964; Baumann, 1968). Light adaptation in the honeybee drone photoreceptors has been investigated by Baumann (1968) and Bader et al. (1976) and has been shown that simple relation between sensitivity and time scale changes observed in Limulus by Fuortes and Hodgkin (1964) does not hold for the drone. |
