THE TRACE-ELEMENT RECORD IN ZIRCON FROM THE LAVRAS DO SUL SHOSHONITIC ASSOCIATION, SOUTHERNMOST BRAZIL

Popis: Zircon concentrates from samples of a granodiorite, rhyolite, quartz monzonite, monzonite, and diorite from the Lavras do Sul Shoshonitic Association (LSSA) were analyzed by LA–ICP–MS for trace elements including the REE after petrographic and mineralogical studies. These rocks are representative of a Neoproterozoic comagmatic suite associated with the postcollisional setting and strike-slip basins in southernmost Brazil. Trace-element contents in zircon grains were divided by the whole-rock contents and the calculated zircon/rock values (D) were compared with mineral/melt partition coefficients (Kd). In spite of the very large range for trace-element contents, even in the same grain, the average values are close to those expected from Kd mentioned by several authors. The REE show typical chondrite-normalized patterns, with strong enrichment of HREE and small positive Ce anomalies. The trace-element compositions of zircon from LSSA reflects the magma composition, and hence provide a useful tool to determine provenance of detrital zircon and in petrogenetic studies.
