A new method for studying the earth—moon system based on direct laser ranging measurements of distances to the moon is developed. The theory for determining the parameters of the earth—moon system from ranging measurements is worked out. On this basis a number of problems in geodesy, geophysics, astronomy, and selenodesy are posed which can be solved by laser ranging of the moon. An automatic laser ranging system was built and is used to make regular measurements of the distances to comer reflectors on the moon with an accuracy of ±90 cm. About 900 measurements of the distances to lunar reflectors have been made. Some parameters of the earth—moon system are determined using these measurements. |
