Popis: To what extent has ‘Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) been successful in enabling companies to react to changing market conditions? An increasing literature is documenting the failure of many systems to live up to their purchaser's expectations. In this paper the authors contend that a ‘technology-centred’ approach to system design results in unforeseen organizational and human Impacts that can significantly impair system performance and the future capability of the company to react to market requirements. The development of an alternative ‘human-centred’ approach, whereby technical and human aspects of advanced manufacturing systems are considered in parallel from the start of the design process, is discussed, and the application of this procedure to the design and implementation of a demonstrator turning cell is described.
