The copolymerization of methacrylic acid with methyl acrylate in water-dioxan mixtures was investigated along with the polymerization of methacrylic acid with butyl methacrylate in dioxan. The reactivities of methyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate were compared with that of methyl methacrylate in the copolymerization of each of the monomers with methacrylic acid. It is shown that in all the solvent systems examined the reactivity of methyl acrylate is lower than that of methyl methacrylate, while that of butyl methacrylate is higher than that of methyl methacrylate. It was found that in the copolymerization of methacrylic acid with esters in water-dioxan mixtures an increase in the amount of water in the reaction medium leads to a rise in the reactivity of the ester and to a simultaneous reduction in that of the acid. The increased reactivity of the ester is due to a change in the rate at which the ester radical interacts with the methacrylic acid monomer. |
