Popis: Biomarkers are used to assess the biological impacts of contaminants on aquatic organisms. There are various levels of biological organization at which biomarkers can be employed, but identifying specific and sensitive biomarkers in a multicontaminated estuarine environment is challenging. Most of the biomarker studies in the Pearl River Estuary have focussed on the estuarine oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis. Measurements of biomarkers in these oysters have suggested that high bioavailabilities of trace metals in the Pearl River Estuary are causing detectable ecotoxicological effects on the estuarine oysters at various biological levels such as the biochemical and physiological levels, the latter manifested in deleterious reproductive effects. Revealing the impacts of contaminants other than trace metals in the estuarine biota will be particularly relevant in future studies.
