Several studies examining performance differences in reading when text is presented on paper and Cathode Ray Tubes have found performance deficits in reading speed when using a CRT. Some of these studies Indicate that performance deficits may be more pronounced on visually Intensive tasks such as proofreading. This study attempts to extend and explain these results by examining performance differences between display mode (Paper versus CRT) and processing type (Top-down versus Bottom-up) for a spatially oriented problem solving task. The results, when combined with a previous study, Indicate that a significant CRT performance deficit exists for bottom-up processing tasks while no differences were found for top-down processing tasks. |
