Popis: Summary Despite a paucity of empirical research and support, Riesman's thesis of a shift in the American social character from inner-directedness to other-directedness has been uncritically accepted by many social scientists. A computerized contextual analysis of 2840 titles of movies identified by Variety magazine as grossing one million dollars or more during the years 1942–1975 was performed to test the thesis. The results of the analysis suggested rejection of the hypothesized shift in the American social character. However, other-directed imagery occurred more frequently than inner-directed imagery over this time period. Moreover, it was found that there was a general decrease in value-directed imagery since the 1940's.
