In two field experiments in which wheat was grown under high levels of nitrogenous fertiliser CCC treated plants outyielded the controls. even though in one of these no lodging occurred. This increase in grain yield was mainly due to an increase in the number of grains produced per ear, with a smaller contribution from a stimulation of tillering. The increased number of grains per ear may be due to the delay in ear emergence which occurs in CCC treated plants. In plants treated with G.A. before anthesis, in the absence of CCC, the time to ear emergence was shorter than in the control plants and the grain yield was greatly reduced. |
