Popis: New types of glasses with active functions have been recently developed, in contrast with the conventional passive role of glass when it is used as a container or as a simple pathway of light. In this new technological sector the rare earth elements contribute to the chemical formulation of both commercial glasses and new functional glasses. The use in glass technology of 14 rare earth elements is reviewed as far as the following applications are concerned: - optical glasses: filters and lenses; - light-sensitive and photochromic glasses; - coloring and decoloring agents; - pH electrodes; - X-ray and gamma-ray absorbing glasses; - luminescence and fluorescence effects; - communication fibres and glass lasers.
