In the view of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV), innovative oncologic treatment modalities have to be documented nationwide in registries, such as the HIPEC Registry. Moreover, the standardization of the surgical procedure is essential and the expertise of the center has an impact on the prognosis of treated patients. Therefore a certification system has been introduced to certify centers for the treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies. This includes own guidelines elaborated for the selection and treatment of all patients. As the multimodality treatment of peritoneal malignancies is a highly interdisciplinary issue, national guidelines for several entities deal among others with aspects related to cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Of great relevance due to the high incidence is the S3-guideline for Colorectal Carcinomas, which has recommended for the first time in 2013 (being one the first European national guidelines to refer to it) this treatment option for highly selected patients with limited and resectable peritoneal metastases, to be treated in experienced centers. The S3-guidelines “Colorectal Carcinoma” were created as part of the oncology program of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF), German Cancer Society, and the German Cancer Aid under the auspices of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Disorders (DGVS). |
