Popis: | This chapter reviews the real-world application of comparative medical radiography via the forensic anthropology laboratory setting at Michigan State University. This method of scientific identification is contextualized within the medicolegal death investigation and existing best practice guidelines. One hundred ninety-three forensic cases from 2002 through 2015 are reviewed in detail. We review research on comparative medical radiography, including recent validation studies that provide support for this method under the Daubert criteria for scientific evidence. Then, a step-by-step approach to procedure is detailed, including postmortem image capture and side-by-side antemortem and postmortem image comparison. Examples of radiographic matches from the most commonly used regions of the body are provided. Finally, possible outcomes of comparisons are discussed, followed by a guide to writing the case report. This chapter is meant to provide practitioners with an overview of practical application and procedures in comparative medical radiography. |
