Photovoltaics has developed considerably in the past fifteen years and photovoltaic systems are now cost effective in many circumstances. The photovoltaic industry is outgrowing its initial stages where technology dominated and is moving to a market–led development. For most markets, photovoltaics should be seen as a means of providing a service, rather than as a generator of electricity. Many potentially large markets would be better served by modules other than the standard 35–50 Wp, which could be incorporated into the product or system offering the service required. This paper will discuss the potential markets for photovoltaics and their consequences for cell and module design, particularly in those markets where the availability of finance is not a constraint. |
