Users of an academic library can vary widely, and it is the library’s duty to make their website accessible to everyone along that spectrum. This project aims to improve readability of three of the most accessed research tools on the website of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s University Libraries. We utilized first-click tests to compare the clarity of alternative names for these research tools using common English words. This study also collected information about participants’ English proficiency level to examine how it affects the understanding of these terms. There were not enough non-native English speakers who participated in the study to make specific conclusions based on native language. General conclusions across all participants included recommendations to keep one research term, to replace the second with the variable term we tested, and to retest the third. |
