Evidence shows that ambassador cheetahs aid educators in teaching conservation messages by making information more interesting and memorable. Exposure to ambassador animals creates an emotional connection between people and the animals, which makes conservation concerns more tangible and is shown to impact conservation actions. Most cheetah ambassadors are found in the United States and South Africa, however, Australia, and New Zealand also have cheetah ambassador programs. This chapter examines the history of ambassador cheetahs and their impact on cheetah conservation through fostering connections and inspiring action. It also examines Species Survival Plan® (SSP) and government guidelines, how cubs become a part of an ambassador program, hand-rearing, socializing, and training cheetahs, and the use of companion dogs. Long-term goals for cheetah ambassador programs are also examined. |
