Background: There is no consensus about the best physiotherapy treatment for infants hospitalized with bronchiolities, pneumonia or obstructivity. The Swedish physical therapists do not recognize their methods in international literature, where passive methods often are descibed. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate what physiotherapy methods are being used in Sweden when treating infants 0-24 months with acute breathing difficulties in hospitals. The hypothesis was that the treatment in Sweden differs from what has been described and evalutated in scientific literature. Methods: An anonymous digital survey was constructed and distributed to pediatric physiotherapist in Sweden. It was posted on professional websites in combination with e-mail correspondence. Results: Replies were obtained from 88 informants, 52 of whom worked with the target group. All 21 counties in Sweden were represented. A variety of methods were used, based on the situation and the individual9s symptom. The most common methods were: 1. Bouncing on a big ball in different body positions, 2. Changing body positions in an adult9s arms, 3. Physical activity, 4. Passive arm- or leg movements, 5. Information to parents, 6. Change of positions in the bed and 7. Inhalation therapy combined with other interventions. Conclusion: The Swedish physiotherapy methods for infants hospitalized with acute breathing difficulties mainly involve physical activity and changing of body position. This treatment approach needs to be scientifically evaluated in clinical trials. |
