Microwave energy in combination with AC corona initiated non-thermal plasma is a promising method for removing of NOx and SOx from the exhaust of diesel engine. Recently experimental work shows that a microwave oven (1.8 kW) can be used as an experimental system to research this subject. However, microwave ovens are often based on cyclic mode operation for controlling the power. This type of control is not suitable for the purpose of continuously cleaning the exhaust gas. This study investigates the use of phase control circuit as a regulator for controlling the power in the microwave reactor. The system was tested and its performance was evaluated. It was observed that phase-controlled power regulator could be successfully used for quasi-continuous (fast-switching) power regulation with the maximization of power efficiency. The developed system is used to reduce the emission gases from a marine diesel engine. Different power settings were used to investigate the effect of the power on the reduction efficiency. The same controlled microwave source based non-thermal plasma reactor will be used to investigate the pollutant removal efficiency of the exhaust gas emitted from a 40 kW marine Diesel engine. |
