Nuclear spin relaxation, rotating frame relaxation, and second-moment linewidth studies have been used to study ordering and dynamics in the solid and mesophases of a series of 4,4′-(bis)alkoxyazoxybenzenes. Results were obtained for both heating and cooling curves. Heptyloxyazoxybenzene smectic C phase second-moment data show a thermal hysteresis and a simple model is developed to explain the results. T1 and T1ϱ do not show thermal hysteresis but T1ϱ is sensitive to the nematic-smectic C transition. A phase transition in the solid phase of butyloxyazoxybenzene, indicated by previous infrared studies, is not evident in T1 and second-moment data for that compound. |
