Today, to realize the promises associated with the upcoming Internet of Things ( IoT ), relevant data are usually sent to cloud‐based servers for storage and further processing to extract relevant features and enable advanced applications beyond the mere provision of raw data. A recent trend, coined fog computing, is to shift those duties to the network edge, to enable faster, more efficient, and more privacy‐preserving services. This chapter provides an overview of the cloud‐ and fog‐based approaches to IoT . Based on this general introduction, a discussion of ongoing and emerging applications and challenges is provided. |
