Gol'dshleyer et al. STAZhur. fiz. Khim. 43, 2174 (1969) and Abs. Intern. Conf. Organometallic Chem., Moscow, 1971,328! proposed a reaction scheme for /sup 1/H--/sup 2/H exchange of alkanes catalyzed by Pt(II) chloride in AcOD and D/sub 2/O. This included a Pt-alkene complex. Hodges et al. STAJ. Chem. Soc. (A); 3230 (1971)! outlined an alternative which omitted the Pt- alkene complex and involved an initial alkane to platinum electron transfer. The exchange was examined further in a series of experiments reported here. Conclusions are drawn about possible reaction mechanisms, in the light of the previous proposals. (UK) |
