Popis: | This introductory paper is intended to set the scene for the more specialized ones which follow and to introduce readers to the expanding archive of historical reinforced and prestressed concrete housed in the Institution of Civil Engineers. The papers in this volume, together with the archive itself, are primarily intended to provide some historical background to help engineers appraising or altering concrete structures, but there is also an educational and cultural slant to them. This first paper also looks briefly at the present standing of concrete as a structural material and at some of the problems which have come to light in the last fifty years. |
