It is now generally accepted from abundant clinical1,2and experimental3-5data that the over-use of oxygen is an important and probably the principal factor in the development of retrolental fibroplasia. There are, however, several controversial factors which are thought to influence the action of oxygen on the premature retina. One of these is the rate of withdrawal from the initial exposure to oxygen. Prolonged gradual withdrawal from oxygen to minimize or avoid the retinal damage produced by oxygen has been advocated principally by Szewczyk6and Bedrossian and co-workers.7 This report is based on experiments designed to evaluate the effect of gradual versus rapid withdrawal from oxygen in the mouse eye. The data show that the additional oxygen administered during a period of gradual withdrawal frequently represented that added amount of oxygen necessary to make an initial nontoxic exposure to oxygen injurious.
