A test unit with a pair of counterrotating wheels and pneumatic tires was designed and evaluated to determine the effect of operating variables and design elements on the efficiency of cotton-plant removal (with roots attached) from the soil. The unit removed 97% of the plants in 5 field locations and was effective over a wide range of travel velocities and pulling-wheel frequencies. Plant removal was significantly better with pulling-wheel angles of 15 and 30 deg from vertical than with a 45 deg angle. Average pulling forces required to pull cotton plants for five field locations ranged from 256 to 373 N. There was no significant difference in the pull force when plants were pulled at 0 and 45 deg from vertical. |
