Diaphragm ultrasound is a highly feasible and noninvasive technique for assessing the physiological function of the diaphragm. Ultrasound permits qualitative and quantitative assessment of diaphragm structure, contractility, and strength (shortening capacity). These measurements have proven invaluable to a variety of research and clinical applications. This chapter provides an overview of basic functional anatomy and mechanics of the diaphragm essential to understand and interpret diaphragm ultrasound imaging, and reviews the technique and applications of this important clinical physiological tool. |
