Land managers and public agencies strive to manage parks and protected areas (PPAs) for a balance between the preservation of both ecological communities and the visitor’s recreation experience. Measuring visitation in PPAs can be a challenge, but it is vital for managing both the user experience and the health of ecological communities. Mobile phones, passively capturing geographic location data while in use throughout our daily lives, represent a significant opportunity for managers and researchers to estimate and analyze visitor use in PPAs. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of this technology in PPAs, we conducted a scoping literature review to understand how mobile phone location services data has been used in research to measure visitation, spatial patterns of use, and visitor experiences in parks and protected areas. The existing body of mobile data research on PPAs provides both methodological guidance and highlights room for growth in our understanding of the use, limitations, and analysis of mobile device location data. Findings from this scoping literature review are presented by highlighting the diversity of existing applications of mobile device location data in visitor use management, practical limitations to available location data and analysis tools, and identifying gaps in the literature and opportunities for future research. |
