Trays of spawned and cased compost that were then protected from basidiospores either by covering them with formalin-soaked paper for 2 or 14 days or by keeping them in a filtered-air spawn-run room showed no significant increase in yield. Virus-like particles were still detectable in the first-flush sporophores by electron microscopy. Comparisons of methods of trapping mushroom basidiospores in and around a mushroom farm have shown that the detection threshold of airborne basidiospores using the Burkard spore trap was approximately too times less than the detection threshold using horizontal sticky slides exposed for 7 days. Horizontal sticky slides were considerably more efficient traps than vertical sticky slides. Measurements of the concentration of airborne basidiospores in different areas of the farm are presented and discussed in relation to the possible routes by which basidiospores may contaminate trays of compost. The minimum detectable concentrations of airborne basidiospores are discussed in relation to the efficiency of air-filtration systems and the minimum dose of basidiospores necessary for disease transmission. |
