Multiphoton ionization, which began with experiments probing the interaction of intense laser radiation with gas phase atoms and was later exploited by molecular spectroscopists, has most recently been applied to mass spectrometry [1–3]. Results thus far indicate that intense lasers can induce abundant ion yields of selected species. A considerable degree of ionic fragmentation has also been observed. Using a time of flight mass spectrometer in order to obtain an entire ion spectrum in a single laser shot, we have been investigating the UV excimer laser induced multiphoton ionization of benzene. A description of the apparatus has been previously published [2], although it should be mentioned that the strong hydrocarbon background evident in this earlier work has been eliminated by thorough cleaning and improved vacuum conditions. |
