Since the seventeenth century, when Britain laid claim to Ireland, relations between Ireland and Britain have been characterised by sometimes violent disputes over sovereignty. In the early part of the twentieth century, Ireland gained its political independence from the UK (of Great Britain and Ireland) with the exception of an area in the north-east of the island of Ireland – Northern Ireland, which remained part of the UK. The constitutional arrangement for Northern Ireland has been in place since then. |
