Popis: There is considerable interest in the use of expert systems in industrial control applications. A generation of expert-system tools, designed specifically for real-time applications, has been developed. This paper examines these tools and suggests that, in terms of reliability and guaranteed real-time response, they do not satisfy fully the needs of a real-time expert control system. In response to this, anarchitecture is presented here which provides a simple runtime system that allows the inclusion of software redundancy. A knowledge-base compiler is also described which converts an expert-system ruleset, including temporal and uncertain reasoning, into a procedural functionwith guaranteed worst-case runtime.
