Popis: A seismic data‐gathering program is ongoing in the Gulf of Alaska on the Kodiak Shelf. Its primary objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of deploying, recovering, and maintaining a network of strong motion, ocean bottom seismometers (SM‐OBS) in an offshore Alaska environment, thereby laying the groundwork for a more comprehensive long‐range program. The SM‐OBS system uses a relatively low‐cost seismic station, which has recently been developed to measure strong earthquake‐generated ground motion at the seafloor. The instrument is capable of accurately recording ground motion within the frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz (3 dB points) and up to 1.0 g peak accelerations. A retrievable preload system was developed to be used during installation to insure that the instrument is properly seated in the seafloor. A network of eight SM‐OBS systems was deployed off Kodiak Island in June 1979. Three additional units, modified for land use, were installed on neighboring islands in close proximity to t...
