We have measured the reactions ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ at 5.0 GeV/c in the region $2.2l\ensuremath{-}tl3.5$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$. We find the minimum cross section of the dip at $\ensuremath{-}t=2.8$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$ in ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p$ elastic scattering to be 0.16 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.05 ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{b}/\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}}^{2}$. The ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ differential cross section exhibits similar structure, while the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ channel shows a steady decline in cross section as $|t|$ increases. The polarization of the ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ remains large and positive to at least $\ensuremath{-}t=2.8$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$. |
