Allthough hip simulator testing shows improved wear behavior for alumina ceramic femoral heads, this fact has not been supported by a clinical series. The aim of this study was to compare the linear wear rates of 28 mm alumina (BIOLOX) vs. Cobalt-Chrome (CoCr) femoral heads in combination with the Harris-Galante-Porous-I and-II acetabular cup with conventional ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liners. A total of 209 implants were measured by using the computer assisted digital method of Martell. 109 implants received CoCr bearings (mean follow-up = 8 yr., range 2–13) while 100 received alumina bearings (mean follow-up = 5 yr., range 2–9). |
