Popis: We hypothesize that nonverbal communication prompts infants to set up kind-based object representations which, in turn, facilitate access to long-term semantic knowledge and, in particular, lexical retrieval. To examine this hypothesis, we will use a looking-while-listening paradigm, similar to that employed by Pomiechowska et al. (2021). In the experimental condition, infants will be exposed to pairs of familiar objects, one of which will be highlighted with a social gesture (i.e., pointing). After the highlighting event, we will test infants’ word recognition by examining their looking behavior in response to a familiar label corresponding to one of the displayed objects (e.g., “Where is the ?”). In the control condition, the trials will be matched in structure and timing with the experimental trials, but none of the objects will be highlighted.
