Popis: | The sediment surface is the boundary over which exposure from contaminated sediments takes place. It is therefore important to find simple and generalizable tools for the prediction of how long discharged hazardous substances remain at this boundary before being buried by sedimentation and mixing processes. In this article, a risk-assessment model is presented. The model is based on the hypothesis that the reduction of plutonium activities from sediment surfaces can be approximated as first-order reactions. From this approximation, apparent half-lives in the range 7–20 years, for three different types of Baltic sediment are estimated. |
