Alstroemeria ‘Campfire’ and ‘Red Sunset’ were propagated every 2 months throughout the year and grown at a minimum temperature of 9°C. The apices of aerial shoots on plants propagated in January and March showed signs of flower initiation within 2 or 4 months. In ‘Red Sunset’, the main rhizomes of these plants continued flower-stem production throughout the year. In ‘Campfire’, flower initiation was delayed during the autumn and about two shoots on the main rhizome of each plant remained vegetative until their senescence. Shoots of both cultivars propagated in July, September and November remained vegetative until the following spring, when flower initiation occurred in both new and previously vegetative shoots. Half of the ‘Red Sunset’ plants propagated in May responded similarly to those of the March propagation; the others remained vegetative until January. Differences in flower production during the autumn are attributed to effects of vigour on the ability of shoots to initiate flowers at relatively high temperatures. |
