Popis: | Background: The paper reports on two cases of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, a genetically determined condition with no pathogenetic treatment. The pathophysiology of the disease is known partially only. Clinically, it is characterized by flare-ups accompanied by severe pain and ectopic ossifications.Findings: The patients’ general condition improved when they were continuously treated with ascorbic acid and periodically received disodium clodronate. The latter reduced the duration and intensity of flare-ups. Early administration of intravenous disodium clodronate at pain onset can prevent flare-ups.Conclusion: Ascorbic acid diminishes pain and makes flare-ups less frequent. The study provides evidence of a possible synergism of ascorbic acid and disodium clodronate during the long-term treatment. |
