The general relationships found in oxidation of carbon chain polymers in solution apply to the oxidation of oligoisobutylene in solution in chlorobenzene. Terminal carboxyl groups in oligoisobutylenes undergo decarboxylation under the action of peroxide radicals and do not affect the total rate of oxidation. The main quantity of CO2 is evolved in decomposition of an intermediate product of the molecular type, formed as a result of uniform attack by peroxide radicals on the methylene groups in the oligomer molecule. The peroxide groups formed in the course of synthesis of the oligoisobutylene, are bound by intramolecular hydrogen bonds to the carboxyl end groups and consequently are unstable. Their decomposition to free radicals at the beginning of the reaction results in an anomalously high rate of decarboxylation and intensification of oxidative degradation of the oligomer. |
