HREELS investigation of V6O13(001) in the metallic and semiconducting phase

Popis: HREEL spectra of V 6 O 13 (001) were recorded above and below the semiconductor-metal phase transition temperature (150 K). At room temperature, the spectrum is found to display surface phonon losses superposed on a free electron background due to inefficient electron screening. Upon cooling below 150 K the spectrum exhibits considerable changes in both loss structure and electronic background, as a result of the phase transition. While for the semiconducting state the complexity of the spectrum and incompleteness of the available optical data prevent an identification of the phonon losses, a preliminary assignment of the losses observed in the metallic phase is achieved.
