Improvements in the performance of sophisticated intrauterine devices are producing results greatly superior to the empirically designed devices used in clinical practice. Pregnancy rates have been reduced with these modern devices to levels superior to the sequential oral contraceptives and only slightly inferior to the protection afforded by combined oral contraception. Expulsion and removals for bleeding complications have been greatly reduced with the modern shield type of IUD, yielding continuation rates distinctly superior to barrier methods, oral contraceptives or the older types of intrauterine device in general use. |
