Popis: | Natural plant fibers have been employed as reinforcement in composites progressively over the past few years. These composites find varied applications in rough environment and recently in response to climate change and sustainability. In addition to this, the manufacturing industry has been consuming natural materials in abundance lately. Bamboo fiber which is inexpensive, environmentally sustainable, fast growing, recyclable and highly abundant with wide distribution of growth, is estimated to contribute significantly to being utilized as reinforced polymer matrix composite in construction industries. In the present work, bamboo fiber mat reinforced with Isophthalic Acid based Unsaturated Polyester Resin composites with varying content of disposed fiber glass is sandwiched in between the bamboo mats is prepared using hand layup technique. Isophthalic Acid based Unsaturated Polyester Resin has been used as matrix and bamboo mat is used as reinforcement whereas waste fiber glass mats are used as a filler material because they have superior mechanical and anti-corrosive properties compared to most polyesters and has higher resistance to moisture and better wetting capabilities. Composites made using Isophthalic resin can be fabricated using the hand lay-up technique as it cures comparatively faster. Fiberglass finds applications in manufacture of auto components, marine products, and aerospace components and in construction hence, it acts as an additional reinforcement. This paper evaluates the bamboo- fiberglass properties in polymer composite. By incorporating varying percentages of waste fiberglass in bamboo mat, reinforced polyester resin panels the mechanical characteristics of the composites including tensile strength, hardness and flexural strength have been evaluated. The fabricated specimens were cut according to ASTM standards- D3039 for evaluating Tensile strength, D790 for evaluating Flexural Strength and D2240 for evaluating Shore D Hardness. The highest improvement of properties was noticed with the incorporation of three layers of fiberglass, with the tensile strength improving by nearly 35% (compared to a composite with no fiberglass) due to incorporation of fiberglass. The flexural strength enhanced by close to 45% (compared to a composite with no fiberglass) and Shore D Hardness saw a negligible drop with the incorporation of fiberglass. From the experimental results, it is evident that with rise in Fiberglass content there is major increment in mechanical strength. |
